All tangled up in racial terms Print E-mail
By Kira Hudson Banks, Special to the Beacon
Last Updated ( Monday, 30 June 2008 )

To talk about racism, people need to know they are on the same page with what they mean. budweiser.jpgPeople who protest the sale of Anheuser-Busch to InBev are like bewildered mourners who place teddy bears and helium balloons at the sites of mass killings. Petitions are another well-intentioned, but ultimately inane attempt to put a humane face on inhuman carnage.

cig100sxc.hu.jpgEven worse than Big Brother, Big Mother has made an industry of saving people from themselves. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the campaign against environmental tobacco smoke, aka secondhand smoke. The science is much less scarey than the politicians.

Progress on race doesn't mean the end of racism Print E-mail
By Kira Hudson Banks, Special to the Beacon
Last Updated ( Monday, 16 June 2008 )

holding75handssxc.hu.jpg Some individuals stress the progress we have yet to make -- pointing out the continued examples of racism and other systems of oppression. While other individuals want to highlight the progress we have made thus far -- noting legal battles and the diversification of the middle class. The former demands the latter “wake up and stop living in denial.” While the latter is sick and tired of hearing the former complain since “it’s a new day.” Why can’t we hold both concepts as valid reflections of our current reality?

Facing Foreclosure: Granite City

mortgageicon.jpg From KETC, Living St. Louis Producer Patrick Murphy visits Granite City, Illinois, a community hard hit by the mortgage crisis—with as many as 120 foreclosure cases each month. Illinois has a judicial foreclosure system that gives you more time before losing your home. The foreclosure begins with a lawsuit and has to be approved by a judge which can take as long as a year. If you're facing a mortgage crisis, the most important thing to do is to ask your lender questions and seek help.
