As kids, many of us just couldn't wait until we were "older." Now, for some of us, we're trying to figure out where did the time go. How did we get to be so old, so fast? As the baby-boomer generation rapidly approaches the so-called "retirement age," some people are trying to figure out just what that means.Beacon reporter Kristen Hare is looking for people who are slightly older than the boomers -- those between ages 65 and 75 -- who can share their stories. Please click on the link above and share your insights.

Have you seen, purchased, sold, or lived in a FEMA trailer?
After hurricanes Katrina and Rita blew through parts of Florida, Louisiana and Texas, almost 120,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency trailers were sent to displaced Gulf Coast residents. After a while, people who lived in some of those trailers reported health problems and suspected the high formaldehyde content of the trailers' particleboard walls as the cause. These trailers are now being resold on the open market. The Lens, in collaboration with St. Louis Beacon, the Miami Herald, and California Watch and researchers from the University of Oxford, is interested in the experiences of the people who lived in these trailers, the housing market for these trailers and the places that they've ended up. If you own or currently live in one of those trailers, you may be eligible to receive, free of charge, formaldehyde testing for your unit.

The Missouri Supreme Court in 2010 issued an opinion that says school districts must comply with a law that allows parents who live in unaccredited districts to transfer their children to nearby, better schools, with their home district covering tuition and transportation costs. An essay in the August 2011 issue of Harper’s magazine compares the 1942 attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor with 9/11.
The 2012 presidential election are just barely on the horizon, but for some hopefuls, it's not to soon to start "testing the waters." Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty was the first when he announced in March that he was forming an exploratory committee. Other possible Republican contenders include Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin.President Barack Obama has also begun his bid for re-election by releasing a campaign video on his website.<br /><br />What do these early announcements mean to you as you think about campaign donations?
What does it mean for the drivers of 30,000 cars when they have to change how they get from one side of Grand Boulevard to another? And what about anyone who walks or rides bikes or buses from the restaurants and hospitals on South Grand Boulevard to Saint Louis University, the Fox Theatre or Powell Hall on the north side? <br /><br />The bridge is closed for the replacement of the Grand viaduct, which is expected to take about two years to complete. Traffic advisers with the city of St. Louis have asked drivers to use Compton and Vandeventer avenues as alternatives while the bridge is closed. But what about bicyclists and folks who walk or ride buses or Metrolink? And what does this mean for business? Please tell us: How does the Grand Boulevard detour affect you?

The manager asked Dodson, "Don't you want to know what this does to me, too?" What Dodson learned helped her write the book, "The Moral Underground."<br /><br />Dodson will discuss her book at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 23, at the Missouri History Museum.
Many of the newly elected members of the U.S. House and Senate, including those backed by the Tea Party, were highly critical of the way that Congress works, and vowed to "fix things" if they were elected. We've heard this before, but many new members of Congress often lose their zeal of reform after they arrive in Washington and run up against substantial barriers to change.
<br/>Why it is so difficult to change the traditions and rules of the House and Senate in ways that loosen the gridlock? Or should those rules be preserved because they serve important purposes.

Public pensions, private pensions, Social Security. What's all the fuss about? How much damage has been done to pension funds by the stock market roller coaster during the economic recession? We hear lots of talk these days about the funding of public pension plans, as state and city governments struggle with their budgets and look at pensions as a place to make cuts. Then there's that ugly question of Social Security benefits, and whether there will be enough money left after the Baby Boomers all retire to take care of future generations of retirees.
<br/>We at the St. Louis Beacon and KETC/Channel 9, want to hear from you about your knowledge and concerns about pensions. Please respond and tell us: What do you know about your pension?

As our human population soars, we must keep finding and using the earth's natural resources to feed our huge appetite for energy. But it is not only the earth we change as we use up its resources but it is also the small communities, which are impacted and often destroyed, taking with them diverse cultures and traditions.
<br/>KETC/Channel 9 and the Missouri History Museum are exploring the impact of coal energy and mining through the free screening of the Independent Lens film, "Deep Down". The free screening will take place Nov. 4, 2010 at 7:00 P.M. in the Missouri History Museum. For the panel discussion after the screening, KETC is looking for a local person who has experience or knowledge in coal energy and/or mining and who would love to engage in a conversation with the audience. Please respond through our Public Insight Network and help us find the person who can discuss: How does our need for energy impact communities?

In <a href="http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?isbn=0309091179">Health Literacy: A Prescription to End Confusion</a>, the Institute of Medicine reports that 90 million people in the United States, nearly half the population, have difficulty understanding and using health information.

There are an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States. The arguments for deportation can be summarized in the following statements: "They definitely broke the law by entering the U.S. illegally"; "they are a strain on our economy because they use our health care and schools"; "they take jobs away from legal citizens"; and "they don't pay taxes." Arguments against deportation revolve around these statements: "They work hard for their families and are generally good people trying to better their lives"; "they do pay taxes if they get a paycheck or own a car or shop in stores"; "they take jobs Americans would not take such as farm work, nanny and housekeeping jobs"; "they provide "cheap" items for us to buy because they provide cheap labor" and "they would become citizens if the path to citizenship was more streamlined".

Who has ties to the old guard, while at the same time is looking at new ways to address old problems? Who are the new activists and visionaries who have no connections whatsoever to the established powers? Please tell us: Who's making a difference?

In the United States, with more than 1 million immigrants becoming naturalized citizens in 2008, learning another language could be a good thing to help promote communication and mutual understanding. But many U.S. citizens agree with some lawmakers who have proposed such laws as having English-only ballots and driver's license exams. With millions of people in the U.S. who speak a language other than English, do these proposed laws help or hurt?
<br/>KETC/Channel 9 and the St. Louis Beacon want to learn about your stories and experiences with language learning. Please tell us whether we should learn to speak more than one language.

Statistics show that obesity and diabetes rates are high in the United States. The latest Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, showed that nearly two-thirds of adults in the U.S. were either overweight or obese in 2009. Conditions are even worse for racial and ethnic minorities. African Americans are 51% more likely to be overweight or obese than non-Hispanic white Americans. Hispanic Americans are 21% percent more likely to be overweight than non-Hispanic whites.
<br/>At the same time, 23.6 million children and adults in the United States -- 7.8% of the population -- have diabetes. For African Americans, the figure is 11.8 percent, 10.4 percent for Hispanics, 7.5 percent for Asian Americans and 6.6% for whites.
<br/>Meanwhile, the costs associated with these conditions are huge: The Denver Post reported recently that University of Chicago researchers predict that in the next 25 years, the number of people with diabetes in the United States will double to 44.1 million from 23.7 million and spending Please respond through our Public Insight Network.

KETC/Channel 9 is exploring the role of immigrants in our communities and the common bonds of all Missourians in our shared homeland. Through conversations with citizens, an interactive website and a prime-time four-hour television series, we hope to shine a light on varied issues faced both by immigrants and existing communities.
<br/>The pedestal below the Statue of Liberty reads "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" Emma Lazarus wrote these words in 1883. Over the years these words and the Statue of Liberty have come to stand for freedom, democracy and international friendship. Are these words still true for our nation today? Does America still stand behind the symbolism of the Statue of Liberty?

Missouri law prohibits an employer from "knowingly" employing an unauthorized immigrant to perform work within the state.<br/>This issue is gaining attention after 14 undocumented workers were arrested in February in Farmington, a small town in Southeast Missouri. The men had been hired to help build a new hotel. The local sheriff said he hoped the arrests would help restore jobs to legal citizens in St. Francois County, where the unemployment rate is more than 11 percent. The Office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, however, told the Sheriff that the case was not a priority and he had no authority to hold the men in jail.Attorney General Chris Koster announced that he is launching an investigation into the situation and will report back to the General Assembly and the state at large.<br/>The St. Louis Beacon and KETC/Channel 9 want to learn what you know about undocumented workers.
On April 6, St. Louis County voters will have the chance to decide whether they want to approve a sales tax increase to support the Metro transit system. Voters rejected a similar request in November 2008. Metro responded by cutting service in March 2009; the agency restored about half of those cuts after it received a one-time, $12 million boost from the state of Missouri plus about $6 million in federal grants. Some areas remain without service, and many routes are reported to be overcrowded.

If you like to eat at a restaurant or sample an adult beverage in a bar in the lovely city of Kirkwood, you may have noticed something different in the air -- or maybe what's not in the air. That's because as of Jan. 2, Kirkwood has gone smoke free in all enclosed workplaces, including restaurants and bars. Some people have objected that the ban went into effect too quickly after voters approved it in November 2009. They would have preferred a gradual transition, like in the city of St. Louis or St. Louis County, where voters also approved bans, but have allowed proprietors and business owners until 2011 to comply. Meanwhile, in Illinois, where smoking was outlawed in almost all public places, including the prisons, since 2008, life goes on.

St. Louis has long been a major hotbed of soccer. Five of the 11 players on the national soccer team that defeated England in the 1950 World Cup were from St. Louis. In addition, 20 St. Louis soccer personalities are enshrined in the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
<br/>In 1959 soccer became a varsity sport at St. Louis University and a college dynasty was born; the school's team won national titles in 1959, '60, '62, '63, and '65. On a national level in 1967, St. Louis established the St. Louis Stars, which stole the spotlight from other sports such as the Cardinal baseball team. Two players of fame for the Stars were Pat McBride and Al Trost. Both men also played for St. Louis University.

The U.S. Labor Department calculates "underemployment" by adding to the unemployed those people who are "marginally attached" to the labor force and those who are employed part-time for economic reasons. The "marginally attached" are those who have been unemployed for the past 12 months but have recently stopped looking for work. In December 2009, the underemployment rate rose to 17.3 percent of the civilian labor force -- nearly 27 million people. In addition to those folks, an uncounted number are working at jobs outside their professional experience or training, and often for less money than they were hoping.
