More storms forecast as rising Mississippi threatens to approach '93 flood levels Print E-mail

Severe storms are expected to hit the Midwest again Thursday, possibly sparking tornadoes and more flooding from Missouri and Kansas up to Wisconsin. The forecast comes after storms began pounding the Midwest at the start of the month, knocking out electrical power, submerging roads and destroying homes and businesses.

Just short of its first birthday, Missouri's new 2-1-1 phone system, a referral system for non-emergency help, is within months of completing an ambitious plan to expand its reach into nine counties in Illinois. Once the program is up and running, it would make the Metro East region among the first in the state to become part of a 2-1-1 system, according to United Way 2-1-1 director Kay Archer (right).

 
Illinois Legislature ends without passing a balanced budget Print E-mail

Although Illinois lawmakers passed a budget and skipped town Saturday night, that doesn't mean work is over for everyone. Lawmakers have passed the red pen to Gov. Rod Blagojevich (left), saying it is his responsibility to bring the admittedly unbalanced $59.1 billion budget in line. On Monday, Blagojevich said he will meet with the four legislative leaders to negotiate the revenue-generating proposals that the House failed to pass.

EPA decides to keep radioactive waste at West Lake landfill Print E-mail

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has decided to build a "multilayered engineered cover" over a 40-acre section of the West Lake Landfill and then install monitoring wells on the site to protect the public from radioactive waste buried there. Local environmentalists, however, say that leaving radioactive waste in a landfill on a floodplain is not a solution in the public interest.
 
Hornbeck Foundation tries to get its paperwork in order Print E-mail

The Shawn Hornbeck Foundation -- which had been under public scrutiny for its failure to file an annual report with Missouri officials -- has ignored multiple requests over the past two years to supply financial and other information to the St. Louis Better Business Bureau. Craig Akers, head of the foundation, tells the Beacon that he hopes to "address that right away."
