Eric Rohmer, 1920-2010

Though the death of a man who was nearly 90 years old should come as no surprise, the news that Eric Rohmer has passed away comes as an unpleasant surprise. Rohmer was a leading member of the French New Wave and a pioneering critic for "Cahiers du Cinema" in the '50s, but as he got older and completed his major work, the philosophically inclined six part "Moral Tales" (see below), his films actually seemed to get younger in tone, offering honest, thoughtful depictions of young men and women trying to define themselves in the world. He was one of the cinema's (last) great realists, and his absence from the contemporary cinema will create an irreplaceable loss.

'The Road Show' improv

This Saturday was the debut of a new show by The Improv Shop that will bring out of town improv teams to St. Louis to play for — and with — a local audience. The Road Show brought teams "Everybody Grok" and "Felt" from Chicago.

We talked to Eric Christensen, producer of the Road Show and member of local improv team "Ted Dangerous"; Katie Nunn, member of "Ted Dangerous" and improv coach; and Melanie Penn and Ranjan Khan, members of local teams "Melanj" and "Magic Ratio"; about the St. Louis improv scene and why it's important to welcome teams from other cities to perform here.

About the Lens

Cinema St. Louis' The Lens is a multi-contributor blog aimed primarily - but by no means exclusively - at local cinephiles.
