sowersdog300chuck.JPGsowers100tommyprovided.jpg a Rhodesian Ridgeback (left) , plans to accompany his owner --Tommy Sowers -- as the latter launches on Friday his 28-day "Boots on the Ground'' tour around the 8th congressional district.

Sowers, a military veteran, is a Democrat running for the congressional seat long  held by by U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Cape Girardeau.

The 8th District spans much of southeast Missouri, and goes as far north as St. Francois and Perry counties. The tour is 28 days because the district has 28 counties; Sowers plans to spend a day and night in each one.

Sowers and Chuck will ride around in a pickup truck "wrapped'' in a campaign-style plastic shell. During his tour, Sowers also borrowing a campaign tactic of former Sen. Bob Graham, D-Fla. -- and former Sen. John Ashcroft, R-Mo.

Like Graham and Ashcroft, Sowers plans to work at a local job at each stop. He's revamping his Web site for the tour, so supporters can follow his progress and choose which job the candidate should take.

"Working on a pig farm or as a bingo caller?'' quipped Sowers on Monday, during yet another visit to St. Louis to call on potential donors and supporters, as well as the press.

Sowers said the 28-day tour was aimed at introducing him to 8th District residents, as well as offering a glimpse of his approach if elected to Congress.

"It's the way I did things in the military,'' Sowers said. "You don't just show up and issue a 14-point plan."

Barroom Conversations

The St. Louis Beacon sponsors every-other-weekly conversations on race, related to the publication's year-long special coverage of issues and situations related to race in the St. Louis region. The lightly-moderated discussions begin with a specific topic, but like all good conversations, veer off in different and rewarding directions. The Barroom Conversations are on summer break, and will resume in September. We look forward to seeing regulars and newcomers when the break is over. Everyone is welcome.
