KETC/Channel 9, St. Louis Beacon and St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU bring critic to town ST LOUIS, MO (November 30, 2009) The St. Louis Beacon, KETC/Channel 9 and St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU have partnered to bring arts journalist Joseph R. Wolin to St. Louis for a special project involving all three public media organizations. Wolin is covering shows at the Contemporary, Kemper, Pulitzer and St. Louis Art Museum as well as other aspects of local visual arts. His work will begin appearing on air and online this week. "When David Bonetti left the Post-Dispatch earlier this year, the door shut on the long tradition of having full time visual arts journalists in St. Louis," says St. Louis Beacon editor, Margaret Freivogel. "The same has happened in other cities, some of them larger. As newspapers trim staff, arts critics are often among the first to go. Yet the arts remain central to our region in so many ways. They help distinguish and define St. Louis and contribute to the rich fabric of life here. They prod each of us to see the world in new ways. They’re just plain fun. And, not incidentally, the arts are a significant economic generator." To support this experiment, the project has received donations from several sources, including the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, Ken and Nancy Kranzberg and others. Their contribution went to a special fund at the St. Louis Community Foundation set up to facilitate the joint effort and to ensure the journalistic independence of the work. While New York based, Mr. Wolin has written about St. Louis artists and curated Splinter of the Mind’s Eye at the Philip Slein Gallery last summer. In addition to writing and curating, he teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design. Pieces aired on KETC's "Living St. Louis" the week of Nov 23, and additional pieces will air on the KETC website the week of Nov 30. The St. Louis Beacon, the not-for-profit online regional news organization, will publish Wolin's pieces beginning the week of Nov 30 and they will interplay with the KETC web pieces. Mr. Wolin will be interviewed on St. Louis Public Radio's "Cityscape" on Friday, December 4. "In this day and age, we've got to move beyond trading logos as a form of partnership," says Nicole Hollway, Beacon general manager. "Being able to start from scratch and leverage a topic from the ground up across platforms - that's where the community receives the real benefit of collaboration among its media outlets. Having partners willing to dig in with you widens the possibilities and accelerates the learning curve significantly." |
