The preeminent voice in regional political coverage joins the staff of the online news publication St. Louis Beacon

ST. LOUIS, MO (February 2, 2009) – The St. Louis Beacon, the online publication dedicated to reporting "News That Matters" to the St. Louis region, announces the addition of Jo Mannies as a full time staff member. This hire is one of two made possible by a grant for local reporting from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The second hire will be announced in the coming weeks.

Mannies, who retired from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch last fall, has covered Missouri politics for more than 30 years. "With decades of experience, Jo has an encyclopedic knowledge of people and issues," says Margaret Freivogel, St. Louis Beacon founder and editor. "That means she understands the context of any controversy and can explain what's at stake for the people of our region. This is exactly the kind of reporting we emphasize here at the Beacon - the meaning of our motto 'News That Matters.'"

Other Beacon editorial and reporting staff members include Sally Altman (Health Editor), Robert Duffy (Associate Editor), Susan Hegger (Issues and Politics Editor), Robert Joiner (Reporter), Brent Jones (presentation editor), Donna Korando (Features and Commentary Editor), Mary Delach Leonard (Reporter), Linda Lockhart (Public Insight Network Analyst) Dale Singer (Reporter) and Dick Weiss (Contributing Editor).
