St. Louis Beacon adds reporters who will focus on race and issues affecting the 35 and under set

ST. LOUIS, MO (February 17, 2009) – The St. Louis Beacon, the online publication dedicated to reporting "News That Matters" to the St. Louis region, announces the addition of two staff journalists. Kristen Hare and Elia Powers will focus on race and issues effecting those under 35 respectively, among other topics. This hire is made possible in part by a grant for local reporting from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

University of Missouri graduate Kristen Hare came to St. Louis after five years as the Sunday features reporter for the St. Joseph News-Press.  As a freelancer for the Beacon, Kristen has written articles on race, immigration and the economy.

A 2003 graduate of Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism, Elia Powers comes to the Beacon after three years covering higher education for the website Inside Higher Ed.  Powers has been a freelancer with the Beacon, covering various healthcare, politics and education topics.

"Elia and Kristen will be tremendous assets in reporting news that matters to people in the St. Louis region," says Margaret Freivogel, St. Louis Beacon founder and editor. "We had more than 80 applicants for these jobs, including several truly outstanding journalists. We picked these two reporters because of their innovative ideas and outstanding track records of coverage."

Also using Knight Foundation funds, the Beacon recently hired political reporter Jo Mannies.

Other Beacon editorial and reporting staff members include Sally Altman (Health Editor), Robert Duffy (Associate Editor), Susan Hegger (Issues and Politics Editor), Robert Joiner (Reporter), Brent Jones (presentation editor), Donna Korando (Features and Commentary Editor), Mary Delach Leonard (Reporter), Linda Lockhart (Public Insight Network Analyst), Dale Singer (Reporter) and Dick Weiss (Contributing Editor).
