Partners with Missouri History Museum and KETC/Channel 9 ST LOUIS, MO (August 6, 2009) Beginning in July of 2009, the St. Louis Beacon, on the internet at www.stlbeacon.org, takes a yearlong look into race in the St. Louis region entitled "Race, Frankly." In this effort, the Beacon is working in partnership with the Missouri History Museum and KETC Channel 9. The History Museum’s upcoming exhibit, "RACE: Are We So Different?," which begins in January, was part of the inspiration for the project. "A lot of people told us this topic was too big or too controversial to tackle," says Margaret Freivogel, St. Louis Beacon editor. "But we think it's too central to ignore, and St. Louisans are ready for a new day. "As longtime St. Louisans know, race is an old, old issue for our region. Now, we have an opportunity to look at our progress and our problems with fresh eyes and to have a more productive conversation. We're approaching that in several ways - through reported stories, through in-person events every month and by giving voice to the experience and perspectives of various people in our region. We're especially pleased to be working in partnership with the Missouri History Museum and KETC/Channel 9. This also represents a new way of addressing important community concerns." Together, the partners will generate a series of events as well as in-depth articles and video pieces that focus on issues of race and discrimination. In July, the Beacon published five articles, three columns and five video pieces on the introductory topic of "What is race?" addressing the science, the sociology and the relationship different St. Louisans have with the topic. A number of the articles include perspectives gathered through the Public Insight Network, an online journalism tool used to help solicit knowledge and insight from sources who opt-in to be part of the network. The kick-off event, co-sponsored and held at the Missouri History Museum, hosted over 175 people who came for a frank discussion titled "Conversations in Black and White."
