Wash U student newspaper offers its take on once-favored instructor: "Mr. Smith Goes to Prison" Print E-mail

smith100jeffsen.jpgWashington University student Eve Samborn, forum editor for the campus' Student Life, this week pretty well sums up the anger and disillusionment that some current and former students may harbor over the fall from grace of former state Sen. Jeff Smith, a popular political science instructor on campus for years.

Smith, of course, resigned from his political post -- and his teaching post -- when he pleaded guilty last week to a felony related to his almost-successful bid for Congress in 2004.

Smith's army of student volunteers helped fuel that campaign, and his winning quest for the state Senate in 2006.

Samborn's headline is a takeoff of the award-winning documentary, "Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore," that local filmmaker Frank Popper made about Smith's failed congressional effort.

'The Road Show' improv

Brent Jones | St. Louis Beacon

This Saturday was the debut of a new show by The Improv Shop that will bring out of town improv teams to St. Louis to play for — and with — a local audience. The Road Show brought teams "Everybody Grok" and "Felt" from Chicago.

We talked to Eric Christensen, producer of the Road Show and member of local improv team "Ted Dangerous"; Katie Nunn, member of "Ted Dangerous" and improv coach; and Melanie Penn and Ranjan Khan, members of local teams "Melanj" and "Magic Ratio"; about the St. Louis improv scene and why it's important to welcome teams from other cities to perform here.

'Simple' Hancock amendment spawned complex state finances

Mel Hancock said the concept was easy to understand: the revenue raised by Missouri should be limited, and voters should vote on higher taxes. More than 30 years later, the effects turn out to be more complex. First of three parts.
