Inaugural Beacon Festival to present new artists' faces in surprising places

ST LOUIS, MO (May 13, 2010) The St. Louis Beacon announces the inaugural Beacon Festival, a firecracker string of events during the week of July 4, 2010. The week-long festival will take guests to unusual places for experiences highlighting some of the region's cultural treasures. The Beacon will light the fuse on the festival with a gala picnic Saturday, July 3.

"Our vision for the Beacon has never stopped at being just a website," says Margaret Wolf Freivogel, editor of the 2-year-old non-profit news organization. "Our mission involves engaging citizens where they are - be that the web, through a partner organization or a live event."

The country picnic that kicks off the festival will be on the grounds of a private estate with picturesque views of the Missouri River. Other highlights of the following week include:

-- a church service featuring one of the best Gospel choirs in the region;
-- a visit to Sugarloaf Mound, the last remaining Indian mound in St. Louis city, for discussion of the vast prehistoric Native American culture that once thrived here;
-- a beer tasting at a new brewery, recently installed in the old Falstaff plant on Forest Park Avenue;
-- a reading by a nationally known author from a novel-in-progress;
-- a percussion concert raising a rhythmic racket inside a well known St. Louis sculpture.

A limited number of tickets go on sale June 1 at 314-632-6121 or http://www.stlbeacon.org/festival . Tickets to the Gala picnic start at $250. Tickets to all other events are $40 which for some, includes transportation.

Full event descriptions and list will be continually updated at http://www.stlbeacon.org/festival.

"We're getting  out of the office and into hidden corners to introduce folks in the region to the magnificent resources here," said associate editor Bob Duffy. "We'll look at our rivers, talk about our history, look at our art, listen to our music and celebrate our optimism for the future of responsible journalism."
