Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and at least three area Republicans in the Missouri Legislature -- House Budget chair Allen Icet, R-Wildwood, and state Sens. Jane Cunningham, R-Chesterfield and Eric Schmitt, R-Glendale -- will headline a town hall on health care in St. Charles on Wednesday.

akin100toddnh.jpgThe forum, at the St. Charles Convention Center, is to begin at 10 a.m., Wednesday. It is being set up by U.S. Rep. Todd Akin (left), R-Town and Country, who plans to join the proceedings via video from Washington.

The forum is intended to debunk President Barack Obama's address at St. Charles High School. The president is expected to press his case for the Democratic proposals to revamp the nation's health-care system.

Akin spokesman Steve Taylor said the Republican officials will assert that the proposed health-care changes would increase costs to businesses as well as state and local governments.

Taylor added that Akin will likely be joined by other Washington Republicans critical of Obama's health-care proposals.

Barroom Conversations

The St. Louis Beacon sponsors every-other-weekly conversations on race, related to the publication's year-long special coverage of issues and situations related to race in the St. Louis region. The lightly-moderated discussions begin with a specific topic, but like all good conversations, veer off in different and rewarding directions. The Barroom Conversations are on summer break, and will resume in September. We look forward to seeing regulars and newcomers when the break is over. Everyone is welcome.
