The votes were taken over the weekend, while assembly leaders were attending the statewide Republican Lincoln Days festivities in St. Charles. Late Monday, the group announced its support for Blunt, R-Springfield. It has yet to comment on its vote in favor of Icet, R-Wildwood, who is competing with former Bush ambassador Thomas Schweich for the GOP nomination. Said Assembly chairman William S. Magill in a statement about Blunt: "Congressman Blunt is a statesman whose moral compass steadfastly points to true north. A statesman, who at the core of his very soul, understands that the liberty of which the Constitution of the United States speaks includes the freedom and right to life, the freedom to be raised and nurtured in a traditional family, the freedom to choose our own destiny, unencumbered by unnecessary governmental interference, and the freedom of death with dignity. Congressman Blunt is not only a friend of genuine conservative values; he is a valiant warrior for them." The Assembly became a force in Missouri politics in the mid-1990s when its leaders backed commentator Pat Buchanan for president in 1996.
