Association president Thomas Walsh said in a statement the group voted at its last meeting to back Icet, R-Wildwood, "for his commitment to public safety and to protecting Missouri taxpayers." The association represents the city police department's rank and file. The group also appreciated his support over the years for legislation backed by the association. Walsh says Icet, chairman of the House Budget Committee, "has ensured the rights of our police officers..." The association did not mention Icet's chief Republican rival, former Bush ambassador Thomas Schweich. Among other things, the association is a staunch opponent of City Hall's effort to regain control of the city police department, which has been under state control since the Civil War. Icet thanked the association, saying in a statement "I’m thrilled to receive this endorsement from yet another group of civic-minded Missourians." "Police officers put their lives on the line every day to keep our streets safe,'' Icet said. "As state auditor, I won’t face the same danger that these officers brave every day. But I will serve with the same sense of public purpose to protect Missouri taxpayers from waste, fraud, and abuse.”
