Super Bowl weekend links Print E-mail

Can you already smell the wings, cheese dip and guac and chips? It’s Super Bowl time, which inspired me to switch things up for this week’s links. Instead of a look around the web for general-interest news stories, I’m focusing my attention on pigskin-related articles. Trust me, there are plenty of them to choose from.

And because sports fans seemingly love rankings, I’ve ordered the articles from 10 (you might want to read it if you’re staying home Saturday night) to 1 (don’t turn on the TV without devouring this). Enjoy.

10. It’s sure not to be the sexiest Super Bowl ad, but people at the U.S. Census Bureau hope that their spot during the telecast will help persuade viewers to fill out the 2010 form.

9. Here’s a rundown of some of the best food to have at your Super Bowl party, courtesy of ABC NewsThe Food Network is also a good resource.

8. You’ve probably read 10 articles already about Peyton Manning’s greatness, so I’ll pass along some other buzz about the Colts’ star QB: A star of the MTV show “Jersey Shore” claims he’s taped a Super Bowl spot with Manning. An ad about abs, perhaps?

7. Here’s the good news for St. Louisians with a winter home in South Florida: Super Bowl tickets are selling right now for well under their usual price. The bad news: The worst seats still cost more than $1,200, reports the Miami Herald. The story says the tickets are at their most “affordable” levels since the Rams played the Patriots nearly a decade ago. Upper level tickets normally go for 50 percent more than what they are selling for this year, the article says.

6. The Colts’ Pierre Garcon, of Haitian descent, is leading the effort to raise money for earthquake victims in Haiti.

5. As this Kansas City Star column notes, former Missouri QB Chase Daniel is two snaps (albeit calamitous ones) away from playing in the Super Bowl. As the third-string QB for the Saints, he still believes he can be an NFL starter one day.

4. I’m a sucker for worst-of lists, and here’s one I couldn’t pass up. It’s a look at the five worst Super Bowl halftime shows of all time, including an Elvis impersonator.

3. Hardcore Rams fans probably have thought about putting paper bags over their heads at games in recent years. It’s become something of a tradition at sporting events, and the New York Times traces the evolution of the paper bag, which until  recently was synonymous with the New Orleans Saints – or Aints, as the fans once called the team.

2. Ten years ago, no Rams fans would have thought about wielding a paper bag. Their team was in the Super Bowl. Some of the players recently looked back at their unexpected run. Do you remember the final play?

1. It’s been hard to escape this story in recent weeks, but if you are playing catch up, here’s a quick primer on the Tim Tebow anti-abortion ad that is running during the Super Bowl. This story has generated plenty of controversy, so be prepared to have your talking points ready for the inevitable conversation that will arise at your Super Bowl party.
