In St. Louis County, the debate between so-called pool cities (such as University City and Webster) and point of sales cities goes on, with millions of dollars in sales tax revenue hanging in the balance.

For would-be entrepreneurs who think they might want to establish their business in St. Louis, Jerry Schlichter's new organization might be able to provide up to 50,000 reasons to lure them here. The attorney is spearheading a new program, Arch Grants, to offer incentives to budding business executives. Up to 30 potential startups could win as much as $50,000.

wentzvillegmplant100logodsIn celebrating the 100th birthday of Chevrolet and good news for the General Motors Wentzville plant, Gov. Jay Nixon took the long view Thursday. "The future of the American auto industry starts right here, right now," Nixon said. GM is investing $380 million in the plant, creating 1,660 jobs and producing the mid-size Chevrolet Colorado pickup.

 
Long-term unemployment takes toll on jobless, economy Print E-mail

trending100downNearly one-third of the nation's 14 million unemployed have been out of work for a year or longer, according to researchers from the Pew Fiscal Analysis Initiative. The analysts found that long-term joblessness continues to plague the U.S. economy in the third quarter of 2011 — three years since the financial crisis of 2008 and two years since the Great Recession officially ended.

Whenever St. Louis lands a high-profile event, forecasters are quick to issue predictions of how the area will grow richer from all the money brought to town. This week's numbers from the Regional Chamber and Growth Association: a $24.4 million boost for the from the World Series, adding up to $52 million from the post-season play. But what do those estimates mean?

'The Road Show' improv

This Saturday was the debut of a new show by The Improv Shop that will bring out of town improv teams to St. Louis to play for — and with — a local audience. The Road Show brought teams "Everybody Grok" and "Felt" from Chicago.

We talked to Eric Christensen, producer of the Road Show and member of local improv team "Ted Dangerous"; Katie Nunn, member of "Ted Dangerous" and improv coach; and Melanie Penn and Ranjan Khan, members of local teams "Melanj" and "Magic Ratio"; about the St. Louis improv scene and why it's important to welcome teams from other cities to perform here.
