Information: Susan Hegger has come full circle. As the politics and issues editor of the St. Louis Beacon, she is excited to be involved in the online revolution in journalism. Susan started her journalism career in 1981 at another brash start-up, The Riverfront Times, where she eventually became the editor. In 1987, she moved to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch where she stayed for the next 20 years. During that time, she was an editorial writer covering international issues, local politics, regional development and women's and children's issues; the arts and entertainment editor; and finally the assistant managing editor for features overseeing the paper's entertainment, lifestyle and features sections. Susan graduated from Ursuline Academy and Washington University. A dedicated runner, she can be found most days on the path in Forest Park.

Bevis Schock says President Obama is like Lucy and equates raising taxes to pulling back the football. If taxes go too high, he says, entrepreneurs will stop trying.

    Posted 9:16 a.m. Mon., 02.08.10 - With a smoking rate of 40 percent, Turkey has created a political and social firestorm is its seven-month old ban on public indoor smoking. Ekrem Mehmet Morali says that the country should have done more to mitigate how the ban affects coffeeshops and to help smokers quit.
  • City crime rates: comparing apples to apples

    Posted 6 a.m. Sun., 02.07.10 - How do you compare crime rates in cities that have different socio-economic conditions? Richard Rosenfeld joined in ranking of cities according to their homicide rates, after adjusting for poverty and other conditions strongly associated with city homicide rates but over which the police exert little control. The news for St. Louis isn't good.

The MIKADO has a little list … were you on it?

The St. Louis Beacon rang in 2012 with a concert performance of Gilbert & Sullivan's beloved operetta, "The Mikado," at the Sheldon Concert Hall, and the Higher Education Channel was on hand to record it. Here is a link to the complete perfomance, which we hope you'll enjoy.

 The musical direction of "The Mikado" was by Amy Kaiser; Craig Terry was conductor-accompanist. All proceeds from ticket sales benefitted the Beacon.
