Several years ago, I taught a class on science fiction films at a local university. On a whim, I decided to begin each session with a musical number relating to the subject we were discussing that week - and was pleased to find far more material than I expected: singing alien Muppets , the TV-controlled characters of "Shock Treatment,"  David Bowie performing "Space Oddity "  and the "Me and my Rhythm Box " song from "Liquid Sky."

In that same spirit, I'd like to offer something similar here on the lens, a Musical Clip of the Week.

And for our first selection, I'd like to make amends to a film that has received far too little attention. A few weeks ago I mentioned that many of my favorite films in 2007 were musicals, but I neglected to mention among then John Turturro's wonderful "Romance and Cigarettes," a film about ordinary people living ordinary lives, but also in part about how music - in this case, mostly pop hits from the 1960s - has infiltrated our subconscious, adding a personal background score to our world. If you haven't seen it, check it out.

Here's what to expect:

Questions for Robert

By: R D Zurick (Registered ) on 21-08-2008 10:43

And how is it that you saw this "favorite film of 2007?" I don't remember it playing St. Louis. Was it at the Tivoli? And wasn't it really released in 2005? Did you actually see this at home, quietly and without audience participation, on DVD instead? I haven't noticed anyone responding to comments on this site yet, but since you're so prolific Robert, maybe you will attend to this one.

Kate Winslet as sex goddess

Did you happen to check out the "She's a Lady" (Tom Jones) clip? As Christopher Walken might say, Wowie, wow, wow!

About the Lens

Cinema St. Louis' The Lens is a multi-contributor blog aimed primarily - but by no means exclusively - at local cinephiles. The Lens will have a specifically St. Louis perspective when relevant - and will preview Cinema St. Louis events - but because film encompasses the world, the blog will offer material on every aspect of movie culture, with no ties to a particular place. Lens contributors - critics, academics, journalists, novelists, poets, essayists and filmmakers - will write, at any length and in any form, about all film-related topics, allowing for a wide array of approaches: simple reviews, stray thoughts, essays, reported articles, cartoons, photos, even audio clips and videos.

For a more complete introduction to The Lens, read the inaugural post by Cliff Froehlich.
