St. Louis fantasy baseball firm tosses shutout vs. MLB Print E-mail

The U.S. Supreme Court refused on Monday to review a case where a St. Louis fantasy baseball company got court approval to use the names, bios and stats of Major League Baseball players without paying Major League Baseball or the players.

Texas Sup. Ct. rules for Mormon sect; state still can protect girls Print E-mail

The Texas Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the state abused its authority in seizing more than 400 children from a Mormon sect that believes in polygamy.  But the court left the door open for the state to take less radical steps to protect young, pubescent girls.

Hulshof cyberbullying bill raises 1st amendment ?s Print E-mail

Rep. Kenny Hulshof joined Rep. Linda Sanchez in introducing a federal law against cyberbullying, a proposal that may violate the First Amendment.  Bruce Sanford, one of the nation's top First Amendment experts, says he doesn't think it is even "plausibly" constitutional.

Texas shouldn't have seized Mormon children, court says Print E-mail

A Texas appeals court ruled Thursday that Texas authorities overstepped their authority last month when they took 468 children from their parents at the Yearning for Zion ranch run by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The U.S. Supreme Court's decision Monday to uphold a federal child porn law may have broad implications because it establishes that the First Amendment does not protect solicitations or offers to commit a crime. National security experts think the opinion may make it easier to convict would-be terrorists who discuss a plot that may never happen.

William H. Freivogel is director of the School of Journalism at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and a professor at the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. Previously he worked for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for 34 years, serving as assistant Washington Bureau Chief and deputy editorial editor. He covered the U.S. Supreme Court while in Washington. He is a graduate of Kirkwood High School, Stanford University and Washington University Law School. He is a member of the Missouri Bar.
