Judge denies Bush executive privilege claim Print E-mail

A federal judge rejected on Thursday President George W. Bush's claim that executive privilege provides absolute immunity for top presidential aids to refuse to comply with congressional subpoenas. This the first time a federal judge has ruled that a congressional subpoena could  be enforced against a presidential claim of privilege.

Kit Bond leads GOP effort killing journalists' shield bill Print E-mail

The federal shield bill to enable reporters to protect confidential sources fell short in the Senate on Wednesday, with Sen. Christopher S. Bond, R-Mo., reportedly leading the opposition. Sens. Claire McCaskill and Barack Obama did not vote.  They were flipping hamburgers along the campaign trail in Missouri.

A federal appeals court in St. Louis has told (on the 8th circuit site search for case number 07-2322, U.S. vs. Missouri) a lower court judge to take another look to see if Missouri is in compliance with a federal law requiring states to purge voter  registration rolls of people who have died or moved away.

Senate could pass "shield law" this week Print E-mail

The Senate is expected to take up a bill this week to enact a federal "shield law" to enable journalists to protect most confidential sources and documents.  The House already has passed a similar version of the law. President George W. Bush opposes the bill as dangerous to national security and threatens a veto.

The Beacon will expand staff and local news coverage with a $90,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation – one of four grants announced Wed., Dec. 17, to local online non-profit news sites. The grants are intended to help fill the void created when traditional media cut staff.
