A new book designed for children opens the world of bonobos through photos of Lucy, who was born in 2003 and lives at the Jacksonville Zoo. St. Louis photographer Marian Brickner teamed with Washington University biologist Ursula Goodenough, who published the book, and Goodenough's daughter, Mathea Levine, who wrote the text.

"Never Been a Time" tells of lynchings and riots prompted by racial hatred in East St. Louis in 1917. About 9 whites died and dozens - perhaps hundreds - of black residents. This excerpt starts as "rioters began torching flimsy railroad shacks on the Mississippi River bottomland."

Also read author Harper Barnes' commentary on the legacy of the riot, which remained in the collective memory of many blacks but not many whites.
