The group spearheading the ambitious project sprucing up the Gateway Arch’s grounds gave a status report Tuesday night to hundreds of people. CityArchRiver's presentation detailed how public and private funds will be used for the roughly $380 million project in 2013 and beyond.
Proposition P went through a meandering path to implementation. Now that it passed, the question is -- what's next? A lot. The beneficiaries of the tax won't start receiving funding until later this year. A spokesman for the Missouri Department of Revenue said that the tax increase St. Louis and St. Louis County should go into effect on Oct. 1.
Voters in St. Louis and St. Louis County approved Proposition P, a 3/16th of one-cent sales tax increase to fund improvements around the Gateway Arch, local parks and regional trails. The measure passed easily in St. Louis, but more narrowly in St. Louis County.

The plans to revive and redevelop the Arch grounds have advanced since the last public meeting. New museum exhibits are being designed to replace many of the old and tired ones at the Museum of Westward Expansion under the Arch and the Old Courthouse. Plans for redoing the streetscape are also more detailed.
Andrew Trivers, the prime architect for renovations at the Old Courthouse, faces special challenges in updating such an iconic historic building. “We’re taking great pains not to damage any of the historic fabric or destroy anything that’s part of the original building,” he said.

On Thursday, the CityArchRiver 2015 Foundation and others pushing the $550 million-plus project forward will give the public an update. The focus will be on the Missouri side of the river. That part of the project is to be finished by October 2015, the 50th anniversary of the topping out of the Gateway Arch.
