McCaskill, Durbin issue scathing rebuke of IRS scrutiny

Two Democratic U.S. senators condemned the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative groups as "un-American" and "absolutely unacceptable." U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill said high-ranking IRS officials should be fired if they knew what was happening.

On the eve of this week's U.S. Supreme Court hearing on gay marriage, U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., used Tumblr to lay out her change in stance on the issue. In 2004 she opposed it. Now, she supports marriage equality. U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., said Monday he still opposes gay marriage.

St. Louis businessman John Brunner isn't ruling out another bid for public office after his failed 2012 bid for the U.S. Senate, but Brunner says he's focusing more these days on encouraging young people to join the GOP and seek office themselves. He spent almost $8 million of his own money in last year's campaign, making Brunner among the top self-funding candidates in the country.

U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., called on U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner, R-Ballwin, to join the effort to persuade House Republicans to support the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which earmarks money to help women crime victims, particularly in domestic-violence cases. The senator was joined by St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, who said the Act was crucial to her office's efforts to protect and defend women victims and "saves lives"

Bi-state battle brewing over Bootheel floodway levee plan

While Missouri's U.S. senators are pressing the Obama administration to take action on the long-delayed St. John's Bayou-New Madrid Floodway project in the Bootheel, officials in far southern Illinois are urging their representatives in Congress to block the project.

Blunt ponders 'hold' on EPA nominee over Bootheel levee project

U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt says he is considering placing a Senate 'hold' on an Environmental Protection Agency nominee as a tactic to spur federal action on the long-delayed St. John's Bayou-New Madrid Floodway project to close a levee gap in the Missouri Bootheel. But Sen. Claire McCaskill called such a tactic "premature," considering that the EPA nomination hasn't even been made.

Shearwater charter school closing its doors
