Emerson endorses Santorum
U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Cape Girardeau, sought on Tuesday morning to clarify her stance when she sent a email to the Beacon, saying that she has indeed endorsed U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum to be the GOP nominee for president.
"My support is an obvious endorsement," said the congressman in the email, adding that she was "sorry for the confusion."
Her top staff member had told the Beacon Monday night that "she’s very supportive of his candidacy,’’ but emphasized that that wasn't an official endorsement of Santorum.
Such a stance isn't unusual for politicians, who sometimes want to keep their personal preferences separate from their political actions.
Speculation about Emerson's support grew after she heartily praised Santorum during his campaign stop last weekend in her district.

At the event, Emerson said she would be voting for Santorum in Saturday’s caucuses and planned to work to help him all this week.
Emerson had told the Beacon about a month ago that she had yet to endorse a candidate but might back someone right before the caucuses.

Santorum came to Cape Girardeau last week at Emerson’s invitation, according to a local TV station, KFVS, Channel 12, which interviewed Emerson.
A Youtube video of Emerson praising Santorum last weekend, and making public her personal support for him, has been circulating the web for days.
