Spotlight: Estrangement no laughing matter, except in Shakespeare's hands

In Performing Arts

Two plays opening this week, one a comedy, one a tragedy about a 1950s comic, explore estrangement and reunification.

The Value of Names
New Jewish Theatre
The Value of Names

In New Jewish Theatre’s “The Value of Names,” Leo the director names his friend Benny the comedian to the 1950s Hollywood blacklist during hearings before the U.S. House Committee for UnAmerican Activities. Thirty years later, the two meet after Benny’s daughter is cast in a play directed by the man who testified against him. Is forgiveness possible -- and what would that look like?

“The Comedy of Errors,” presented by The Rep, tells the story of two sets of twins, separated at birth. When the foursome unknowingly converges at New Orleans' Mardi Gras, mistaken identities result in double trouble and accusations of infidelity, theft and madness until a happily-ever-after ending closes the Shakespearean saga.
