State Department of Education hosting 'Race to the Top' forum
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon will kick off on Monday the Race to the Top Stakeholders Forum organized by Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro.
Nicastro is assembling nearly 300 educators, legislators, business leaders and "other stakeholders from across the state" for the daylong forum, to be held at the Capitol Plaza Hotel, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
According to the release:
"At the meeting, state education officials will gather ideas and suggestions to guide the ongoing development of Missouri’s application for Race to the Top funding – more than $4 billion that states are competing for by creating ambitious education-reform plans that focus on four key themes:
- Academic standards and assessments
- Data systems that support instruction
- Recruiting and retaining great teachers and school leaders
- Support for struggling or low-performing schools
Invited participants in Monday’s forum will meet in four topic-oriented subcommittees to develop ideas and recommendations for the state’s official proposal, which is due in mid-January."
Live video coverage of the meeting will be provided throughout the day at http://dese.mo.gov/rt3.
