Keaveny files bill to return police control to the city of St. Louis
ted 4:15 p.m. Tues., Dec. 1: Missouri's newest state senator, Joe Keaveny, D-St. Louis, made good on his pledge by pre-filing his first bill Tuesday. As promised, it calls for returning control of the St. Louis Police Department to the city of St. Louis.
For more than 100 years, the department has been under state control, although the city pays the bills. (The setup stems from Missouri's Civil War divisions, where the state capital backed the conferency but the city of St. Louis preferred union forces.)
State Rep. Jamila Nasheed, D-St. Louis, said today that she also is committed to making local control her top priority in the House. She reinterated her earlier belief that Republican House leaders also support the idea.
