U.S. Rep. William Lacy Clay is once again hosting his annual career fair, which is underway today at Harris-Stowe State University.

Clay, D-St. Louis,  estimates that over 100 employers will participate in the event, including aircraft manufacturer Boeing, the St. Louis Zoo and the FBI.

His staff estimates that at least 5,000 job-seekers showed up -- about the same as its report last year.

"This amazing community response exceeded my greatest hopes for this year's Career Fair," said Clay in a statement as the fair prepared to close.  "It shows the urgency of unemployment and underemployment in the First Congressional District and throughout the St. Louis region.  My number one priority is to help put my constituents back to work and to connect them with job opportunities that they could not take advantage of by themselves..."

This is the sixth year for the fair, and Clay says it's the fourth featuring representatives with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. (Click here to read the Beacon's account of last year's fair.)

According to his release, the participating employers this year include:

"The Boeing Company; Macy's; BJC Healthcare; Centene Corporation; GKN Aerospace; Wells Fargo Advisors; Express Scripts; World Wide Technology; the state of Missouri; McDonalds Corporation; Hardee's; Emmis Communications; Enterprise Holdings; the St. Louis Zoo; Schnucks; Best Buy; Lodging Hospitality Management; Four Seasons Hotels; St. Louis University; the federal Transportation Security Administration; the Internal Revenue Service; the Federal Bureau of Investigation; local fire and police departments; hotels and casinos; education and healthcare providers; Clear Channel Radio; Radio One; financial institutions," as well as local governments.

When a family of four goes to the St. Louis Zoo, they can be forgiven for not knowing it will cost them $60, $72 if they park. If they can't pay, the alternative is to tell the kids they can't do what kids do at the zoo.

Bosley right to put child first - but not to ask others to pay

Asking for contributions for a child’s college education is legal in Missouri. But not right. Because a parent should help his or her children in almost any way they can,  such obligations must be kept far away from a politician’s public responsibilities — it is not hard to figure out which one would lose if they conflicted.
